The rankings are based on a series of components including graduation rate, college matriculation rate, AP tests taken per graduate, average standardized testing scores and the number of Advanced Placement courses offered at each school. According to the Newsweek report, LAMP boasts a 100 percent graduation rate, with 100 percent of students going on to college.

Lamp has also received high marks in several other highly acclaimed academic lists, falling 20th in the U.S. News and 23rd in the Washington Post rankings.

The school houses students in grades 9 through 12 and has an annual enrollment of 400.

Three other Birmingham high schools — Vestavia Hills, Homewood and Oak Mountain — made the list, as well as New Century Technology school in Huntsville.
