Fifth graders Hayley Bellino, Megan Alford and Cody Stewart fill out a classroom survey on their first day back to school at Dixie Attendance Center near Hattiesburg Miss. Most Alabama students will be returning to class this week.
The week-long camp will focus on grade level readiness, prepping kids in grades 1-5 for the upcoming school year by pairing them with local certified teachers to review the subjects and skills needed to succeed in the grade they will be entering. The student-to-teacher ratios will be small so students can receive individualized instruction. At the end of the week, campers will celebrate with a party featuring water balloons, frozen treats, dancing and more.
“As a former classroom teacher, I think this camp is awesome for both the students and teachers,” said program manager Rebecca Bloodworth. “It really eases the transition from summer to school. One of the biggest challenges a teacher faces the first few weeks of school is getting students motivated and focused after a three-month break.”
